On Wednesday, Minister of Economic Integration, Small Enterprises, Employment, and Skills, Younes Skouri, held a professional meeting with the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Gilbert F. Houngbo, in Geneva. This meeting reflects the deep strategic partnership between Morocco and the ILO in the areas of sustainable economic and social development.
The meeting follows the visit of the ILO Director-General to Morocco in May, underscoring both parties’ commitment to enhancing cooperation to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development goals.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the latest national and international developments, focusing on Morocco’s significant progress in labor rights. One of the highlights was the adoption of the regulatory law governing the conditions and procedures for exercising the right to strike, which was approved by the Moroccan Parliament and confirmed by the Constitutional Court for its compliance with the constitution. The law was officially published in the Official Gazette, demonstrating Morocco’s dedication to balancing workers’ rights with the needs of businesses and the public interest.
The ILO Director-General praised this initiative, noting that it is a pioneering step in the 21st century. He highlighted Morocco’s exceptional ability to create a balanced legislative framework that protects workers’ rights while maintaining the economic needs of businesses and safeguarding the public interest.
The meeting also touched upon another international leadership role for Morocco, as the country was chosen to host the 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour, scheduled for 2026. Morocco was unanimously selected by the ILO member states for this important event following the nomination presented by Minister Skouri in Geneva in 2024.
This nomination reflects global confidence in Morocco’s ability to lead international efforts to combat child labor and promote children’s rights on a global scale.
In conclusion, Minister Skouri emphasized the importance of this strategic partnership with the ILO, noting that this fruitful cooperation demonstrates Morocco’s deep commitment to achieving sustainable social and economic development and contributes to enhancing the country’s regional and international standing.
