On Friday, social media pages circulated photos and videos showing swarms of locusts in the city of Tafraout, raising concerns among internet users about the arrival of desert locusts in Morocco from Algeria and Libya.
However, a source from “Le Site info” confirmed that the locusts seen in Tafraout are not related to the desert locusts coming from Algeria, explaining that this type of locust sometimes appears in the region and is considered a good omen by locals.
A resident of Tafraout confirmed that these locusts are small and do not fly, unlike the swarms seen in several Arab countries. He pointed out that these locusts do not pose any danger to crops, unlike desert locusts that destroy them.
It is worth noting that desert locust swarms recently invaded Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, causing great concern among Moroccan farmers. As a result, Morocco, through the National Locust Control Center, deployed teams in areas near the Algerian border, particularly in Tata and the southeastern provinces, to closely monitor the situation and take necessary measures in case of an invasion.
