Director of Fes Local Prison Hosts Academic Officials to Leverage Their Expertise

Under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the 14th edition of “University in Prisons” was held at the Ras El Ma Local Prison, with the theme “The Contribution of Handicrafts Industries to the Reintegration of Prisoners through Training and Education.” This scientific session, organized in partnership with Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University in Fes, provided a platform to discuss various scientific topics focusing on the role of handicrafts in the rehabilitation of prisoners, aiming to enhance their social reintegration and improve their lives after release.

The event was attended by several officials, including the director of the Ras El Ma prison, who emphasized the importance of choosing handicraft industries as a profession that aids in the reintegration of prisoners, particularly in Fes, which is considered the scientific capital of the Kingdom. He also noted that these professions are part of the cultural heritage that must be preserved and play a role in providing employment opportunities for inmates, in line with the royal directives regarding advanced regionalization.

Professor Mohamed Bouzlafah, Dean of the Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences at Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University in Fes, expressed his joy at the university’s participation in organizing the event in cooperation with the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration. He highlighted the significance of such initiatives, which began in 2016, aimed at discussing issues related to the rehabilitation of prisoners and providing them with comprehensive educational opportunities. Bouzlafah clarified that such meetings open up discussions with inmates about their training, both academic and in practical skills such as communication, language, and law, which improve their chances in the job market after their release.

The session also provided an opportunity to engage with the participating inmates. One of them, Marouane, a first-year student in private law, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the scientific event. He noted that the session was rich in activities focused on traditional industries, helping them acquire new skills, particularly in marketing and preserving traditional products. Marouane emphasized that these sessions greatly boost self-confidence and help inmates strengthen their personal skills, making the reintegration process easier after their release.

These initiatives, organized by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration in collaboration with academic institutions, continue to provide valuable opportunities for inmates, not only in terms of education but also in vocational training and life skills. This session serves as a living example of how education and traditional professions can be effectively used for the rehabilitation of prisoners, aligning with the royal vision of enhancing human development efforts across all regions of the Kingdom.
