Suspicious Public Contracts and Voucher Distribution Shake Meknes Municipal Council, Case Reaches Minister of Interior

Fatima Tamni, a parliamentarian from the Federation of the Democratic Left, has sent a letter to the Minister of Interior regarding the financial and accounting audit report of the Meknes Municipality for the years 2021-2022. The report revealed clear irregularities in the management of public funds and local administration, raising concerns about the level of transparency and governance in the use of financial resources by local institutions.

According to initial available data, the report highlighted several alarming issues, particularly in the management of public contracts, human resource employment, and revenue collection. These critical areas, which should adhere to strict standards, exposed deficiencies in expenditure rationalization and maximizing the benefits of available resources.

In light of these findings, Tamni submitted a written question to the Minister of Interior, inquiring about the measures taken by the ministry to address these irregularities and rectify the situation. She also questioned the possibility of launching an administrative or judicial investigation to hold those responsible for financial mismanagement or corruption accountable.

Tamni further emphasized the need to take steps to prevent the recurrence of such irregularities in the future, warning that the absence of oversight and accountability threatens good governance and undermines the credibility of local institutions.

In a related context, Councilor Abdelwahab El-Bekkali exposed new issues within the Meknes Municipal Council during a public meeting. He pointed out the distribution of 200-dirham vouchers as a substitute for food aid baskets, the misuse of municipal vehicles for personal purposes, and the fact that some council members took vacations at the municipality’s expense. Additionally, he revealed that certain housing subdivisions were approved without meeting the required legal conditions.
