Burkina Faso Praises Morocco’s Role in Fostering Dialogue within the African Peace and Security Council

In a formal letter addressed to Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, expressed his sincere congratulations on the pivotal role Morocco is playing in the presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.

Traoré commended the Kingdom of Morocco’s distinguished leadership, particularly through the organization of informal consultations held last Tuesday in Addis Ababa with countries whose membership in the African Union has been suspended due to changes in their political systems, namely Burkina Faso, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Sudan. These meetings provided representatives from these nations the opportunity to present updates on the progress of democratic transition processes in their respective countries, within a framework of realism, mutual listening, and constructive dialogue.

In his letter, the Burkinabe Minister acknowledged the “new leadership at the helm of the Peace and Security Council, especially the imprint left by the Kingdom of Morocco, which is based on promoting constructive dialogue informed by realism and mutual understanding.” This effort aligns with Morocco’s African policy, guided by the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God protect him.

As the chair of the Peace and Security Council for March 2025, Morocco has demonstrated a high sense of responsibility and a steadfast commitment to peace, stability, and the unity of the continent. The informal consultations, held under Article 8, paragraph 11 of the Peace and Security Council Protocol, provided an essential platform for communication with countries undergoing political transitions, exploring optimal solutions to support their return to constitutional order. These initiatives ultimately aim to achieve the full reintegration of these nations into the African Union.

Morocco’s multifaceted approach, rooted in cooperation and solidarity, has enabled the addressing of the specific contexts of each concerned country. These consultations underscore Morocco’s determination to support these friendly nations in their efforts to accelerate their democratic transitions.

By opening a new chapter in bilateral relations between Burkina Faso and Morocco, Traoré’s letter of appreciation extends beyond the framework of the Sahel Alliance, becoming an international recognition of Morocco’s leading role. This role extends to promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across the African continent, in line with the Kingdom’s strategic vision.

This initiative launched by Morocco’s presidency of the Peace and Security Council serves as a model for enhancing African cooperation. It represents a pivotal step in strengthening relations between African nations, emphasizing Morocco’s role as a key player in achieving stability, progress, and continental unity.

Through its Foreign Minister, Burkina Faso affirmed its commitment to supporting these efforts and backing Morocco’s presidency of the Peace and Security Council in fulfilling its duties in service to Africa.
