CAF Bans the Use of Maps on African Club Jerseys Due to Political Symbols, in Compliance with Strict International Ruling

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a ban on the use of political symbols, including maps and emblems, on club jerseys participating in continental competitions, in adherence to a ruling issued by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In an official letter to national federations, CAF emphasized the necessity of maintaining political neutrality in African competitions. It referenced the ruling issued on February 26, 2025, in case No. TAS 2024/A/10528, filed by the Algerian Football Federation and USM Alger against CAF, RS Berkane, and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. The ruling confirmed that “images of a political nature on jerseys are in violation of CAF’s laws and regulations.”

As a result, any sports equipment featuring political references will be prohibited in continental tournaments, with responsibility falling on the concerned federations and clubs. Additionally, CAF’s designated committee will review and approve official jerseys.

CAF affirmed that it will not hesitate to take strict measures, including banning or mandating modifications to non-compliant jerseys during ongoing tournaments, to ensure full adherence to this binding decision.
