Algeria Protests French-Moroccan Military Drills in Errachidia, Calls Them ‘Provocative’ and Summons French Ambassador

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the French Ambassador to Algeria, Stéphane Romatet, on Thursday to protest his country’s participation in military drills set to take place in Morocco. Algeria described these maneuvers as a “provocative act” against it, warning that they would escalate tensions between the two countries.

In an official statement, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Secretary-General of the Ministry, Lounes Mekremane, received the French ambassador and expressed the “seriousness of the French-Moroccan military exercise” scheduled for September 2025 in the Errachidia region, near the Algerian border. The exercise, named “Cherki 2025,” was deemed by the Algerian official as a provocative step against Algeria.

According to the statement, the Secretary-General of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that these maneuvers would further inflame the current crisis in Algerian-French relations, potentially leading to additional tensions between the two countries. He also called on the French ambassador to provide clarifications regarding the drills, urging him to formally convey Algeria’s position to the French authorities.

On the other hand, Spanish newspapers, including “La Razon,” reported that military cooperation between Morocco and France includes the construction of an airbase in southern Moroccan Sahara, aimed at enhancing air operations against terrorism in the Sahel region. As part of this cooperation, an agreement was made to organize drills in the “Rahmat Allah” and “Ardu” areas near Errachidia.

The “Cherki 2025” maneuvers consist of two main phases: the first is a Command Post Exercise (CPX), where operational scenarios are simulated to develop joint planning and decision-making capabilities. The second phase is a live-field exercise (LIVEX), where combat readiness is tested, and coordination between land and air forces is strengthened.

These drills aim to enhance cooperation between the Moroccan and French armed forces to address security challenges in the region, particularly in coastal and desert countries, as well as combat terrorist organizations.

This step highlights the military and strategic dimensions of this cooperation, which represents a strong security relationship between Morocco and France in the field of regional and international security. However, it simultaneously raises regional tensions, especially with Algeria, which views it as a direct threat to its national security.
