Several Arab and Islamic countries announced on Friday evening that Saturday, March 1, 2025, marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, following the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon. Among these countries are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Palestine, Yemen, Jordan, and Lebanon.
On the other hand, countries such as Malaysia, Brunei, Pakistan, and Japan have declared that Sunday, March 2, 2025, will be the first day of Ramadan due to the inability to sight the crescent moon on Friday evening.
In Iraq, the start of Ramadan has been marked by division. The Sunni Endowment Office announced that Saturday would be the first day of fasting, while the office of Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani stated that Ramadan would begin on Sunday.
As for Morocco, no official announcement has been made yet regarding the start of Ramadan. According to astronomical calculations, it is expected that Sunday, March 2, 2025, will be the first day of the holy month in the kingdom. The Moroccan Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs is set to issue the official decision after moon sighting efforts on Friday evening.
It is worth noting that the beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, which often results in variations in fasting start dates among Islamic nations.
