Morocco will cancel the slaughter of sacrificial animals on Eid al-Adha 2025 due to economic and climatic conditions, and these are the opinions of Moroccans!

In a message to the people, read by Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Ahmed Tawfiq, King Mohammed VI announced the decision to cancel the slaughter of sacrificial animals for Eid al-Adha in 2025, in light of the economic and climatic challenges facing the country, which led to a significant decline in livestock numbers and unprecedentedly high prices.

The king : The decision takes into account the interests of citizens

In his letter, the King emphasized that he has always been keen to provide the appropriate conditions to enable people to perform rituals and Sunnahs, including the Eid al-Adha ritual, but the current circumstances require taking into account the purchasing power of citizens, especially those with limited incomes.

Royal message

“Our keenness to enable you to fulfill this religious ritual in the best conditions is accompanied by the duty to recall the climatic and economic challenges facing our country, which have led to a significant decline in livestock numbers,” the royal message said.

“Bearing in mind that Eid al-Adha is a confirmed year with the ability to perform it, performing it in these difficult conditions would cause real damage to large categories of our people, especially those with limited incomes,” he added.

The King concluded his letter by appealing to the Moroccan people, saying: “We urge our dear people not to perform the Eid al-Adha sacrifice this year. We will, God willing, slaughter the sacrifice on behalf of our people.”

Hassan II canceled Eid three times

According to the comments of Moroccan social media activists, these decisions have had a positive impact in the long term, as they have contributed to promoting self-sufficiency in livestock and reducing the need to import them in hard currency, a successful strategy that has lasted for more than thirty years.

Moroccans reacted : Support for the decision and criticism of middlemen (shanaka)

The royal decision received a wide response among Moroccans, with many citizens expressing their understanding of its motives, considering that it comes to protect the purchasing power of Moroccan families in light of the skyrocketing prices of sacrificial animals due to the limited supply.

Some considered that the implementation of the decision would be a strong blow to the so-called “shanaqa,” the middlemen and traders who take advantage of the seasonal demand for sacrificial animals to raise prices exaggeratedly.

On the other hand, others expressed their regret over the abolition of this ritual, noting its deep connection to Moroccan customs and traditions, although they recognized that the decision was based on realistic economic data.

Implications of the decision : Will it contribute to economic stability?

Observers believe that the decision to cancel the slaughter of sacrificial animals this year may be an opportunity to strengthen the livestock breeding sector, especially after the significant decline it has witnessed in recent years due to drought and high fodder costs, and may contribute to easing the financial pressure on Moroccan families, especially in light of the high cost of living.
