In an exclusive statement to Fes News following the February 2025 session of the Fes Municipal Council, municipal councilor Ali Al-Qasb strongly criticized the council’s governance, arguing that its approach to handling various issues was legally, ethically, and politically flawed.
Al-Qasb highlighted that the session witnessed deep disagreements over several key points, most notably the establishment of a Youth Municipal Council. He argued that the process of approving it lacked legal legitimacy and a participatory approach, as the targeted youth groups were not effectively involved, leading to hasty decisions with unclear roles and responsibilities.
The councilor also criticized the new tax regulation concerning the use of public spaces, stating that it sparked widespread anger among café and restaurant owners who were not consulted in the discussions, despite the direct impact on their businesses. He stressed that the council was obligated to adopt a participatory approach, considering that those affected include not only high-end business owners but also small and medium-sized operators who depend on this sector for their livelihood. He emphasized the need to consider social and economic aspects before making decisions that directly affect citizens’ sources of income.
Al-Qasb further pointed out that repeated walkouts during the session reduced attendance to only 10 to 15 members, reflecting a real crisis within the ruling coalition of the Fes Municipality. Additionally, he revealed that the election of the tenth deputy was postponed for the fifth or sixth time, which, in his view, indicates political instability. He argued that internal disputes and factional interests are paralyzing the council’s work, with members more focused on power-sharing and political gains rather than addressing the real issues facing the residents of Fes.
In conclusion, Al-Qasb called for an urgent review of the council’s governance methods, warning that the continuation of such practices reinforces political disengagement and deepens public distrust in elected institutions. He stressed that the council must shift its focus to real developmental issues that matter to the people, instead of being preoccupied with narrow political conflicts that hinder meaningful progress in local governance.
