Duplication of daily rental law between Fez and northern cities sparks controversy

A special source revealed to Fez News that there is a clear disparity in the application of the daily rental law between the Fez Meknes region and the northern cities, where this activity is tolerated in Tetouan and Tangier, while the authorities in Fez deal very strictly with it despite the new law stipulating the need for licensing in all Moroccan cities.

The source explained that the authorities in Fez chase anyone who conducts daily rental operations without a license and impose penalties that include prosecution and administrative closure, causing great losses to small investors, while the situation remains different in the northern cities where the activity continues without similar administrative restrictions.

He added that these practices reflect a kind of economic discrimination in the application of laws, noting that the imposition of strict measures in Fez but not in other cities leaves small investors with limited options to either leave the market or look for illegal ways to practice their activity.

The source spoke about the difficulties faced by investors to obtain a daily rental license, stressing that the adopted law imposes arbitrary conditions that are not commensurate with the nature of the activity, as obtaining licenses requires complex administrative procedures and high costs, which makes it difficult for many people to enter this field.

The source suggested easing the licensing procedures by using only the national ID card and proving the investor’s relationship with the property, while leaving quality control to digital companies such as Airbnb and Booking, which adopt strict standards to ensure the quality of services, instead of holding the administration responsible for imposing conditions that increase the complexity of the process.

He stressed that freeing the sector from bureaucracy will contribute to enhancing investment opportunities and stimulating tourism and real estate activity in Fez instead of creating a repulsive environment for investors, calling for the law to be applied uniformly in all cities to ensure equal opportunities and fair competition.

He pointed out that these measures, if not reviewed, may lead to continued economic stagnation in Fez Meknes and increase the gap between the regions in the field of real estate investment, calling on the authorities to reconsider the policies adopted to ensure a more open economic climate that allows all investors to operate according to clear and fair rules.
