Algerian Salma Malika Haddadi Elected Vice President of the African Union Commission

On Saturday, February 15, Salma Malika Haddadi of Algeria was elected Vice President of the African Union Commission, securing 22 votes against 26 votes for her Moroccan rival, Latifa Akharbach.

Haddadi won the position after obtaining two-thirds of the votes in the seventh round of voting. Thus, the post of Vice President of the African Union Commission goes to Algeria.

The Algerian diplomat will hold this position alongside Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti, who was elected Chairman of the African Union Commission at the 38th Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Youssouf obtained two-thirds of the members’ votes, that is, 33 votes out of 49 countries entitled to vote. The election saw the elimination of the candidate from Madagascar in the first round, leaving a competition between Djibouti and Kenya, represented by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
