Nabila Mounib, parliamentarian for the United Socialist Party, called for the need to hold corrupt people accountable and recover looted funds, stressing the need to truly implement the principle of linking responsibility to accountability.
Mounib’s intervention came during a plenary session in the House of Representatives yesterday, Tuesday, dedicated to discussing the report of the High Council of Accounts, where she emphasized that corruption is a structural issue in Morocco, requiring an effective strategy to fight it, and in this regard, she called for the harmonization of the Code of Criminal Procedure with the procedural requirements to combat corruption crimes, taking into account the important recommendations made by the Integrity, Prevention and Combating Bribery Commission.
Mounib also criticized government policies, arguing that there is a tendency towards “commodification”, monopolization and rentier economy, which exacerbates social and economic conditions. She emphasized the need to improve the roles of the state and put an end to what she described as “running forward,” calling for the preparation of competent frameworks capable of promoting a society of science and knowledge.
In the same context, she expressed surprise that the illiteracy rate in Morocco remains at 27 percent, despite the country’s 70 years of independence, considering this an indication of the failure of educational policies.
She also criticized the failure of tax reforms, as well as the issues faced by public institutions and enterprises, and expropriation issues, calling for the adoption of a firm national strategy to combat corruption. She also stressed the need to recover the billions of dirhams that some economic actors benefited from the liberalization of fuel prices, and called for an urgent solution to the crisis of the SAMIR refinery and its reactivation.
