Concerns of Taxi Drivers in Morocco Due to New Regulations Threatening Their Livelihood

New regulations regarding taxi licenses in Morocco have raised significant concerns among taxi drivers, as the General Directorate of National Security has mandated that operators of first and second category licenses must provide a recent certificate of life for the license holder. Failure to do so could result in the loss of their right to operate.

These measures aim to combat fraud and manipulation within the sector but have been met with widespread apprehension from professionals. Deputy Ismail Zitouni addressed Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, expressing the difficulties arising from this new procedure.

Zitouni pointed out that the geographical distance between license holders and their places of operation complicates obtaining the certificate of life, hindering drivers’ activities. He also expressed concern that some license holders might exploit this situation to financially extort drivers.

The deputy called on the Interior Minister to simplify these administrative procedures, arguing that the ministry already possesses the necessary information about license holders.

These regulations come as part of broader efforts to improve the quality of taxi services in Morocco. A circular issued by the Interior Minister in April 2022 had already introduced strict conditions for taxi operations, including requirements for driver training and management of operating permits.

While taxi drivers acknowledge the need for stricter regulation, they fear that these new measures will further complicate their daily lives and increase their vulnerability to potential abuses.
