Progress on the Fes-Taounate Highway Project: 65% Completion of the First Phase

In a statement, Mohamed Mahtadi, Head of the temporary setup for the Fes-Taounate highway project, reported that the work is progressing well, with the first phase reaching a completion rate of 65%. The project, which is being carried out as part of a partnership between several stakeholders, includes four main phases due to the region’s geographical and geological characteristics.

He explained that the first phase, connecting Taounate to Oulad Daoud (16 kilometers), is progressing successfully with a budget of 260 million dirhams. Despite challenges such as the relocation of water and electricity networks and land expropriation, these hurdles have been overcome.

Mahtadi also spoke about the second phase, which began in July 2024, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 or early 2026. He announced that studies for the third phase have started, with bids expected to open in February 2025. The fourth phase is currently in the study stage, with construction expected to begin in 2025.

Additionally, Mahtadi mentioned the construction of 11 engineering structures, including two bridges over the Oued Ouergha River, at a cost of 110 million dirhams. The total cost of the highway is 1.56 billion dirhams, funded by the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the Fes-Meknes Region, the Taounate Provincial Council, and the Agency for the Promotion and Development of Northern Provinces.

In conclusion, Mahtadi emphasized that this project will help break the isolation of the Taounate region, boost the local economy, improve road safety, and reduce travel time between Fes and Taounate.
