Last week, the Forum of Taounate Competencies organized a study day to discuss the future of cannabis cultivation, transformation, and export. The event brought together Moroccan and international experts, including Chakib Al Khayari, the National Coordinator of the Moroccan Coalition for the Medical and Industrial Use of Cannabis, and Mohamed Ahmamouchi, an international expert based in Canada.
The study day focused on analyzing the current state of cannabis cultivation in the Taounate region, one of the primary areas involved in this activity alongside Al Hoceima and Chefchaouen. Idriss Al-Wali, President of the Forum, praised the royal initiative that exempted farmers from legal prosecution following the enforcement of the legalization law. He emphasized that this legislation provides an opportunity to integrate farmers into the legal economy and achieve sustainable development.
Discussions at the event delved into the potential of transforming cannabis into high-value-added products in medical and industrial fields. Emphasis was placed on fostering partnerships between farmers and economic stakeholders to maximize benefits. Idriss Maroun, a former minister, highlighted that organizing cannabis cultivation within a legal and institutional framework paves the way for new economic opportunities, particularly through manufacturing and exporting.
Said El Ghoul, the Forum’s Secretary-General, noted the significant shifts in cannabis cultivation, transitioning from secrecy to legal and regulated practices. He stressed the importance of leveraging cannabis in medical and cosmetic industries rather than confining its use to traditional drug-related purposes.
Chakib Al Khayari described the study day as a symbolic milestone, acknowledging Taounate’s pioneering role in advocating for the legalization of cannabis cultivation. He expressed optimism that this law would bring tangible benefits to farmers, improving their living conditions and integrating them into national development dynamics.
The event concluded with the recognition of several prominent figures who have contributed significantly to advancing this issue, conveying a message of appreciation for their efforts in fostering dialogue on this pivotal matter.
