New Year 2025 Begins with a New Tragedy in Gaza

Gaza witnessed a new humanitarian tragedy at the start of the new year 2025, as Israeli airstrikes killed at least 19 Palestinians on New Year’s Eve, according to emergency services in the territory on Wednesday.

Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defense, stated: “While the world was celebrating the new year, we welcomed 2025 with the first Israeli massacre in the Gaza Strip.” He added that an Israeli airstrike targeted a house in Jabalia, northern Gaza, moments after the new year began, resulting in the death of 15 people and injuring more than 20 others from three displaced families: Badra, Abu Warda, and Taroush.

Eyewitnesses reported that the house was completely destroyed by two missiles fired from a fighter jet, with several people still trapped under the rubble. Jibril Abu Warda, 35, a relative of some of the victims, described the incident as a “massacre,” adding that “children and women have been turned into pieces.”

Gaza emergency services also reported the death of four other Palestinians in an Israeli airstrike on Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

Amidst the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza after more than 14 months of war, a wave of bad weather has exacerbated the suffering of the displaced. Civil Defense announced that “more than 1,500 tents housing displaced people have been flooded in camps across the Gaza Strip.”

According to the latest statistics from the Hamas-run Health Ministry, which the UN considers reliable, at least 45,553 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the Israeli military campaign on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
