Syrian Foreign Minister Receives Phone Call from Moroccan Counterpart

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani received a phone call from his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, during which the latter affirmed Morocco’s supportive stance towards the Syrian people and Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

During the call, Bourita emphasized the importance of historical relations and common grounds between the two countries, affirming the Kingdom of Morocco’s keenness to enhance cooperation with Syria in the coming phase.

This communication comes within the framework of intensive diplomatic movements in the region following recent developments in Syria, as Arab countries seek to reposition themselves and strengthen their relations with Damascus.

Morocco had closed its embassy in Damascus in 2012 in protest against the policies of the previous regime. With recent changes, it appears that Rabat is moving towards reopening diplomatic communication channels with Syria, in a step that reflects the Kingdom’s desire to contribute to regional stability and support the Syrian people.

This contact is considered a positive indicator of the potential improvement in relations between the two countries in the near future, and may pave the way for more serious steps towards resuming full diplomatic relations between Damascus and Rabat.
