The National Health Union, affiliated with the Democratic Confederation of Labour (CDT) in the Fes-Meknes region, has announced plans to hold a warning sit-in on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection’s delegation in Ifrane. The protest is in response to what the union describes as violations of the rights and dignity of healthcare workers in the region. This move follows an incident in which a nurse at the Atlas Urban Health Center in Ifrane was verbally assaulted while performing her professional duties, without receiving the necessary support from the responsible authorities.
According to the union’s statement, instead of receiving legal protection and administrative support, the nurse was subjected to malicious inquiries and called to appear before a preliminary investigation committee. The statement stressed that this action contradicts laws that prohibit disciplinary measures against healthcare employees before a judicial ruling in cases related to the performance of their duties. The union also pointed out the failure of the regional health delegate to enforce Ministerial Circular No. 5035 issued in October 2021, which stipulates legal protection and professional support for healthcare employees who face assault during work.
The union accused the regional delegate of negligence in his duties and of turning the case into a tool for curbing union freedoms, arguing that these practices reflect a systematic targeting of serious and responsible union work. The regional office of the union emphasized that it will not stand idly by in the face of what it sees as attempts to undermine the dignity of health workers and target union activists.
In this context, the union reiterated its commitment to defending the rights of healthcare workers and emphasized that supporting the assaulted nurse is both an ethical and militant duty, reflecting unity within the union. It also expressed its readiness to continue providing legal and professional support to the affected nurse until justice is served.
The union clarified that the purpose of the warning sit-in is to send a clear message to the authorities that the dignity of healthcare workers is a red line, and that the continuation of these violations will not go unanswered. It called on the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to urgently intervene to address this issue and take the necessary steps to ensure the protection of healthcare staff from any violations or abuses. The union added that this action is not only in defense of the assaulted nurse but also to protect the rights and dignity of all workers in the healthcare sector.
In conclusion, the union emphasized that defending the dignity of workers is part of its ongoing struggle, and that this sit-in is the first step in a series of militant actions until justice is achieved and the rights of health workers in the Ifrane region are respected.
