Spanish Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), Pedro Sanchez, will chair the World Council of the Socialist International in Rabat next Saturday. The meeting will be co-chaired by Driss Lachgar, Secretary-General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), host of the Socialist International meetings.
Preparatory meetings for the World Council of the Socialist International began on Tuesday, December 17, at the USFP headquarters in Rabat, with 200 people participating in discussions on topics such as peace, security, and democracy in Africa, recent floods on the African continent, the conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Among the topics to be discussed in the coming days is the empowerment of women in the North Africa and Middle East (MENA) region. The World Council of the Socialist International will run for three days, from Friday, December 20, until Sunday, December 22.
It’s worth noting that the Socialist International, founded in 1951, is an international alliance of political groups from socialist, labor, and social democratic currents, as well as trade unions that adopt this ideology. Since 2006, this organization has included about 132 political parties from around the world.
This visit comes in the context of strengthening relations between Spain and Morocco. Sanchez’s last official visit to Morocco was in February, where he was received by King Mohammed VI and met with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. Sanchez is expected to deliver a speech during this event, reflecting the importance of this meeting at both regional and international levels.
This meeting represents an important opportunity to discuss pressing issues facing the region and the world, and to exchange views on ways to promote democracy and social justice. It also serves as a platform for socialist and social democratic parties to coordinate their efforts in addressing shared global challenges.
