Moroccan authorities have extradited a young man to Israel following his arrest last year in Rabat, based on an arrest warrant issued by Israeli authorities. The Israeli police announced in a statement published on their official X (formerly Twitter) account that Morocco had handed over to Tel Aviv Nassim Khalibat, “suspected of placing an explosive device near the offices of the Ministry of Health in the city of Nazareth in 2021.”
According to the Israeli police statement, the suspect fled the occupied Palestinian territories in March 2022, “after the explosion of the device that caused significant damage.” The statement noted that the arrest of the young Palestinian Khalibat, who holds Israeli citizenship, and his extradition is “a first for the Israeli police.”
This operation was carried out through collaboration between the intelligence division, the air unit, the “Yamar North” unit, and with the assistance of the international division of the public prosecutor’s office. This event is considered a significant development in the relations between Morocco and Israel since the signing of the Abraham Accords in December 2020, which led to the normalization of relations between the two countries.
It is worth noting that Nassim Khalibat, about 20 years old, is accused of involvement in a bombing that took place in Nazareth in 2021. He was arrested in Rabat in January 2023, after fleeing to Morocco in March 2022. It should be noted that this case has sparked controversy in Morocco, with several Moroccan human rights organizations calling on authorities not to extradite Khalibat to Israel.
This move reflects the strengthening of security and judicial cooperation between Morocco and Israel, despite the absence of a formal extradition agreement between the two countries. Khalibat is expected to face trial in Israel, where he could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the charges against him.
