King Mohammed VI has sent a message of condolence and compassion to French President Emmanuel Macron following the devastating passage of Cyclone Chido over the Mayotte archipelago on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
In his message, the King stated, “I learned with deep emotion about the devastating passage of Cyclone Chido over Mayotte.” He added, “In this painful moment for your nation, I extend to you, and through you to the French people and the bereaved families, my sincere condolences and the expression of my profound compassion.”
The King also expressed his solidarity with the injured and affected, saying, “My thoughts also go out to the injured and the disaster victims,” affirming that “the Kingdom of Morocco shares the pain of your friendly people and assures them of its full solidarity in this ordeal.”
This comes at a time when Mayotte, a French territory in the Indian Ocean, is facing devastating effects from Cyclone Chido, which hit with unprecedented force since 1934. The cyclone has caused significant human and material losses, destroying thousands of homes and severely damaging health infrastructure and food supply chains in the territory.
This message is an expression of the strong diplomatic relations between Morocco and France, and a confirmation of humanitarian solidarity in times of crises and natural disasters.
