French President Emmanuel Macron announced a new diplomatic initiative aimed at reviving the Middle East peace process during his state visit to Saudi Arabia. He will co-chair an international conference with the Saudi Crown Prince in June 2025 to discuss the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The announcement came during the second day of Macron’s state visit to Saudi Arabia, where he emphasized that the conference will focus on the two-state solution as a foundation for peace in the region. He indicated that the coming months would witness intensified diplomatic efforts to gather international support for this path.
The French President expressed his readiness to recognize the Palestinian state at “the appropriate time,” suggesting this step could be taken before the June conference, depending on developments on the ground. He added that France is working to convince both European and non-European partners to move in this direction.
Saudi Arabia, as a major regional power, maintains its position that establishing a Palestinian state is a prerequisite for any normalization with Israel. The Saudi Crown Prince ruled out recognition of Israel in September without the creation of a Palestinian state.
Macron criticized serious violations of international law in the West Bank, warning against the influence of extremists pursuing continued settlement expansion and undermining the two-state solution. He noted that the current political reality in Israel, with a government coalition opposing the two-state solution, poses a significant challenge to this initiative.
