In its weekly session held on Thursday in Rabat, the Ministerial Council approved a draft decree suspending customs duties on the import of domestic cattle and sheep, based on a proposal by the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fishing, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Ahmed El Bouari, on behalf of the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, in charge of Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa.
This decree amends previous decrees issued in January and October 2024 related to suspending customs duties on domestic cattle and sheep imports.
A press release from the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament, government spokesperson, clarified that this step comes in the context of continuing government measures aimed at ensuring regular supply of the national market with red meat.
The press release added that the government aims through this decree to increase the import quotas, which have become insufficient to meet local demand, in order to ensure optimal supply of red meat to the market.
It is worth noting that this step reflects the Moroccan government’s keenness to achieve food security and provide citizens’ needs for animal products.
