In the wake of the severe floods that swept across vast areas of southeastern Spain in September 2023, Morocco demonstrated significant humanitarian support under the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The disaster caused extensive damage to infrastructure and substantial material losses. The King instructed the Minister of Interior to communicate with the Spanish side, confirming Morocco’s readiness to provide assistance by sending relief teams and necessary equipment.

The Moroccan initiative involved sending two convoys of specialized trucks equipped with water pumping and suction capabilities, as well as specialized teams consisting of 70 workers equipped with the latest technical equipment. Spanish officials described Moroccan support as “essential,” as it contributed to accelerating relief efforts and rehabilitating the affected areas, reflecting the depth of humanitarian cooperation between the two countries. The strong relations between Morocco and Spain were also praised, as they extend beyond the political realm to include solidarity in the face of natural disasters.

Moreover, Moroccan support was not limited to official efforts; members of the Moroccan community also significantly contributed to providing assistance. They prepared and distributed hot meals for those affected by the floods and the rescue teams working in the field. Many participated in cleaning and debris removal efforts, which enhanced the spirit of solidarity with local Spanish communities and left a positive impact on the humanitarian relations between the Moroccan and Spanish peoples.
