In a bid to strengthen digital independence in Europe, Germany’s Ecosia and France’s Qwant have announced a joint initiative to create an independent European search engine called “The European Search Perspective.” This new venture aims to reduce reliance on American search engines like Google and Microsoft by providing a European alternative that caters to the unique needs of European users while enhancing data protection.
The project will feature a newly built search index tailored specifically to the European market, with a focus on respecting local languages and cultures. The initial launch will prioritize search results in French and German, with plans to expand the engine’s reach to other European countries. Expected to go live in France in early 2025, the service aims to progressively extend across Europe.
The collaboration between Ecosia, known for its environmental focus, and Qwant, an innovative force in search technology, reflects Europe’s aspirations for greater autonomy in the digital realm. It offers a fresh alternative, aiming to cater specifically to local users and their unique requirements.
