Spanish authorities have declared a state of maximum alert in the regions of Murcia and Almería following severe floods caused by Storm Dana, which has hit the area forcefully in recent hours.
The Mazarrón area experienced a dangerous rise in water levels, with flow rates reaching 200 cubic meters per second by Sunday noon, resulting in cars being swept away and streets being submerged. Water levels in some inland areas reached 80 millimeters.
Las Moreras River in Mazarrón recorded a record flow rate comparable to the average flow of the Ebro River in Zaragoza, which typically reaches 230 cubic meters per second, reflecting the magnitude of the disaster affecting the region.
As a precautionary measure, authorities sent emergency alerts to citizens’ phones, urging them to remain in their homes for their safety. This crisis comes after Storm Dana severely impacted the Valencia region before extending to other areas.
