In its latest meeting held on October 31, 2024, the Moroccan Government Council approved Decree No. 2.24.927, presented by the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Toufiq.
This decree aims to include the Doctorate in Islamic Studies among the official degrees offered by the institutes and institutions affiliated with Al-Qarawiyyin University in Fez.
This initiative is part of Morocco’s broader agenda to advance higher religious education and strengthen the framework for Islamic sciences research within the country.
The decree updates the previous Decree No. 2.17.226 issued in June 2017, now officially granting Al-Qarawiyyin University in Fez and the School of Islamic Sciences in Casablanca the authority to award doctoral degrees.
This represents a significant step toward diversifying advanced academic programs and addressing the educational needs of Moroccan students aspiring to pursue advanced studies in religious and Islamic sciences.
This decision, part of Morocco’s strategy for the development of religious education, will enhance the kingdom’s standing as a key academic destination for Islamic studies.
It also marks a pivotal step in developing a generation of specialized researchers capable of actively contributing to promoting moderate Islamic thought and reinforcing the core values of Islam.
