The Algerian press waited until the third day of French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Morocco to respond harshly to his statements supporting Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
While major newspapers like “El Khabar” and the official “El Moudjahid” ignored the event, other Algerian newspapers attacked the visit and Macron’s position. “El Watan” published an article titled “Macron Violates International Law,” noting that France’s enhanced support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal, announced in late July, “did not pass without consequences in Algeria, causing a deep crisis between the two countries.”
“El Watan” considered Macron’s speech before the Moroccan Parliament on Tuesday, in which he confirmed that the “present and future” of the Sahara “fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” represents a new escalation that “might definitively cut the thread of Ariadne that still connects him to Algeria.”
The newspaper reminded readers that Algeria withdrew its ambassador from Paris “with immediate effect” following the French announcement in late July, which Algeria denounced.
For its part, “TSA” website considered that the rapprochement between France and Morocco “was driven by French lobbies hostile to Algeria,” adding that Morocco “doesn’t have much to offer” to France because “the kingdom is neither a consumer market nor an Eldorado for French companies.”
The Arabic-language newspaper “Echorouk,” which is close to the authorities, stated that “none of the objectives that Macron built in his relations with Algeria have been achieved,” adding that “despite the French president’s attempts to get closer to Algeria since 2020… Paris continues to lose what remains of its economic interests.”
