French President Emmanuel Macron received Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau at the Élysée Palace on Monday, in their first meeting since the latter took office. The meeting focused on discussing immigration issues and sensitive positions, especially in light of the delayed appointments of police and gendarmerie chiefs.
A source close to the President stated that it is “normal” for the head of state to meet with the Interior Minister to discuss “international and domestic issues” such as intelligence and immigration. The source noted that Macron has focused on sovereign matters since forming a semi-coalition government with right-wing Prime Minister Michel Barnier.
The source added that the meeting also addressed upcoming appointments, without providing further details. Announcements for the directors of police and gendarmerie are expected soon. The minister’s entourage confirmed to AFP that “the meeting was a real working session where all topics were discussed, including appointments, immigration, drug trafficking, and daily security.”
Retailleau emphasized the role of “diplomacy, a reserved domain of the President, in obtaining consular laissez-passer” from countries whose citizens are subject to orders to leave French territory.
Although the President is careful to display “demanding cooperation” with Barnier and avoid controversy with his ministers, he has previously responded to Retailleau. Macron has stated that immigration is not necessarily “bad,” while the Interior Minister, a prominent figure in the conservative right and advocate of a hard line on the subject, has made it his main issue.
Retailleau is scheduled to accompany Macron during a state visit to Morocco from October 28 to 30.
