With the support of the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency, the “Ona” olive harvest campaign for 2024 has reached the village of “Um Al-Lahm” in northeastern Jerusalem Governorate to assist the village’s farmers in achieving a successful season, despite the challenging economic and social conditions faced by the city and its residents. This support, provided by the agency this year for more than 1,500 farmers in Jerusalem Governorate, comes as part of the social programs sponsored by the agency under the direct supervision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, within the framework of empowering the active groups in the city economically.
For the third consecutive year, the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency sponsors the olive harvest season in partnership with the Jerusalem Governorate under the “Ona Olive Harvest Support” program. The program provides electric harvesting machines equipped with portable batteries, ladders, blankets, brushes, bags for transporting the harvest, and other equipment used in the olive harvest. The support is being distributed proportionally across 30 villages and towns in Jerusalem Governorate, particularly in the village of “Kharab Um Al-Lahm” in northwestern Jerusalem, the village of “Mukhmas” in the center of the governorate, and the “Wadi Al-Houz” area of Al-Eizariya. These areas have been subjected to larger attacks this year compared to others.
The campaign in “Um Al-Lahm” was overseen by Abdullah Siam, Deputy Governor of Jerusalem, and Ismail Al-Ramli, Coordinator of the Agency’s Programs and Projects in Jerusalem, in the presence of Hani Dhiab, Head of the Village Council of “Um Al-Lahm,” and a group of farmers. The Head of the Village Council of “Um Al-Lahm” expressed his gratitude to the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency for its generous initiative in supporting the olive harvest in the village. He emphasized that this is the first time in 13 years that the village has benefited from similar support.
The olive farms in the village of “Um Al-Lahm” are distributed across lands separated by the separation wall, which makes them a target for settlers. The village, one of the villages of Jerusalem Governorate, is located in the extreme northwest of the Holy City and, like other rural areas in Jerusalem, suffers from the impact of unstable political, economic, and social conditions in the city.
The “Ona” olive harvest campaign is an important step in supporting farmers in facing the challenges they encounter. The support of the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency for the farmers of Jerusalem Governorate is a valuable contribution to strengthening the local economy and improving the living standards of the residents. The support helps increase agricultural production and achieve more profits, provides new job opportunities and improves the social conditions of the residents, and strengthens solidarity among farmers and encourages mutual cooperation.
