In a move reflecting notable progress in urban development, Rabat, the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, was unanimously selected by a panel of experts to win the UN-Habitat Honorary Award for 2024. This announcement came during the celebration of World Habitat Day in Queretaro, Mexico, on Monday.
This prestigious award is granted to cities that have achieved exceptional accomplishments in urban development and significantly contributed to improving the quality of life of their residents. The Rabat City Council stated in a press release that Rabat’s nomination for this award represents a distinguished international recognition acknowledging the importance of the “Rabat City of Lights, Cultural Capital of Morocco” program launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
Thanks to this program, Rabat has emerged as a vibrant cultural and sports center, affirming its commitment to promoting sustainable urban development in line with Sustainable Development Goal 11. The city’s public spaces have been redesigned to encourage community participation and personal development, adopting a human-centered approach to improve access to social services and promote inclusion through sports, art, and culture.
One of the major achievements has been the creation of 175 proximity sports fields distributed throughout the city, providing spaces for a variety of sports activities and promoting well-being and social inclusion, especially for young people. A dedicated entity has also been established to organize daily and major events to further enliven public spaces and encourage community engagement.
In 2023, the “Rabat Youth” competition brought together more than 8,700 participants, illustrating the positive impact of these initiatives. As a result, Rabat stands out as an inspiring example of good governance and urban development, harmonizing culture, inclusion, and sustainability, thanks to the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
