Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Presides Over the Grand Prix Finals of Tbourida in El Jadida

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan presided yesterday over the finals of the seventh edition of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s Grand Prix for Tbourida, as part of the tenth edition of the Horse Show in El Jadida.

Tbourida, also known as Fantasia, is an authentic Moroccan traditional art that combines horsemanship skills and traditional military displays, where riders perform synchronized group demonstrations showcasing their prowess in horse riding and coordinated gunpowder firing.

Upon his arrival at the Mohammed VI Exhibition Center in El Jadida, His Royal Highness was received by Moulay Abdullah Alaoui, President of the Royal Moroccan Federation of Equestrian Sports. The Crown Prince then reviewed a Royal Guard detachment that rendered the honors.

The Crown Prince was greeted by several officials, including the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water, and Forests; the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication; the Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Education, Primary Education, and Sports; as well as the Wali of the Casablanca-Settat region, the Governor of Casablanca Prefecture, and the acting President of the Regional Council and El Jadida Province.

The competition featured 18 Serba (traditional riding teams) representing various regions of the Kingdom. His Royal Highness watched the finals from the Royal Tent. At the conclusion of the competitions, His Royal Highness presented the awards to the winners as follows:

  • Grand Prix: The Serba led by Commander Charaf El Bahraoui from the Marrakech-Safi region
  • Second Prize: The Serba led by Commander Abdelghani Ben Khadda from the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region
  • Third Prize: The Serba led by Commander Hamid Reffak from the Marrakech-Safi region

It is worth noting that Tbourida, which stands as one of the most prominent manifestations of Moroccan cultural heritage and traditional equestrian arts, was inscribed in 2021 on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This global recognition reflects the exceptional value of this authentic Moroccan traditional art that combines horsemanship skills with deep-rooted traditions.

The event concluded with a commemorative photograph of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan with members of the three winning teams, in a scene that embodies the Royal leadership’s commitment to preserving and developing this authentic cultural heritage.

Note on Terminology:

  • Tbourida: A traditional Moroccan equestrian art form unique to the Kingdom of Morocco
  • Fantasia: The colloquial name for Tbourida performances
  • Serba: A traditional riding team that participates in Tbourida competitions
