On the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the foreign ministers of the Sahel Confederation, Morocco, and Chad held a joint meeting in New York last Friday. The meeting was attended by Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop, his Burkinabe counterpart Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, Niger’s Bakary Yaou Sangare, Chad’s Abderaman Koulamallah, and Morocco’s Nasser Bourita.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the Moroccan initiative aimed at enhancing access to the Atlantic Ocean for Sahel countries. The ministers praised the efforts made by the national working groups of the participating countries since their first meeting in Rabat last June.
During the meeting, the ministers examined projects proposed by Morocco within the framework of this international initiative, which align with the national development plans currently being implemented in each of the participating countries. The ministers welcomed the progress made in activating this initiative.
The ministers agreed to hold a meeting soon to continue implementing the international initiative launched by Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, which aims to enhance access to the Atlantic Ocean for Sahel countries.
This meeting comes as part of joint efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and improve access to maritime resources for Sahel countries, which could contribute to enhancing economic and social development in the region.
