The Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza reported on Saturday that an Israeli airstrike targeted Al-Zaytoun “C” School in Gaza City, resulting in the death of 21 people, including 13 children and six women, one of whom was pregnant.
Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for the Civil Defense, stated that the attack also injured about 30 people, including nine children. Bassal confirmed that thousands of displaced people had sought refuge in this school, fleeing from the ongoing fighting between Hamas and the Israeli army since October 7.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health also confirmed the death of 21 people in this raid.
In a statement, the Israeli army said it “carried out a precise strike against terrorists operating inside a Hamas command and control center in Gaza City,” indicating that the target was “inside” Al-Falah School adjacent to the Al-Zaytoun School buildings.
Footage from AFP showed the ground floor of the school covered in debris and a large hole in the ceiling of what appears to be a classroom.
Randa Al-Nadim, a displaced person from Gaza, told AFP: “Here, a woman fell as a martyr, and her blood is on the stairs,” adding that the victim was pregnant.
Eyewitnesses reported that before the bombing, orphans had gathered in the building to register with a local NGO providing humanitarian aid.
Hamas condemned the strike on Al-Zaytoun “C” School, describing it as a “war crime under American cover,” referring to the United States, which is Israel’s main military supporter.
Hamas added in its statement: “There has also been an increase in attacks on residential neighborhoods and tents of displaced people.”
It’s worth noting that other schools in the Gaza Strip have been bombed in recent months by the Israeli army, which accuses Hamas of using school buildings where thousands of Gaza residents have taken refuge, a claim denied by the Palestinian movement.
In another development, the Gaza Ministry of Health announced that an Israeli bombing targeted a warehouse in a “densely populated” area in the southern Gaza Strip, resulting in the death of “three Ministry of Health employees and a passerby,” and injuring six others.
The ministry added in a statement that “the warehouse was targeted by several missiles while doctors and staff were preparing to transport medicines stored in it to hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Health, which are facing severe shortages of medicines and supplies.”
The Israeli army did not immediately comment on this latest bombing when contacted by AFP.
