The Israeli military and U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Saturday evening the discovery of six hostages’ bodies in the Gaza Strip, including that of an American-Israeli citizen. These individuals were among those kidnapped during Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7th last year.
In a statement, Biden said, “Earlier today (Saturday), Israeli forces recovered the bodies of six hostages held by Hamas in a tunnel under the city of Rafah.” He added that among them was Hersh Goldberg-Polin. The U.S. President expressed feeling “devastated and outraged” by this news.
Biden affirmed that “Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes,” emphasizing that the United States will continue working “around the clock to reach an agreement ensuring the release of the remaining hostages.”
Vice President Kamala Harris condemned Hamas, describing it as an “evil terrorist organization.” She added, “With these murders, Hamas has even more American blood on its hands.”
Harris stressed the need to “eliminate the threat Hamas poses to Israeli citizens and American nationals in Israel,” asserting that “Hamas cannot control Gaza.” She also pointed out that “the Palestinian people have also suffered under Hamas rule for nearly two decades.”
It’s worth noting that during the Hamas attack on October 7th, 251 people were kidnapped from Israel and taken to the Gaza Strip.
The President detailed that Hersh was among the innocents brutally attacked while attending a peace music festival in Israel on October 7th. He lost his arm while helping friends and strangers during Hamas’ savage massacre. Biden was 23 years old at the time.
Biden also mentioned Hersh’s parents, Jon and Rachel, who “tirelessly and relentlessly advocated for their son and all hostages held in unacceptable conditions,” expressing his admiration for them and sharing their grief “more deeply than words can express.”
The President assured that he had “worked tirelessly to bring their beloved Hersh back to them safely,” adding that “the news of his death breaks my heart.”
Vice President Harris, in a separate statement, said she was praying for Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s loved ones. “As it is said in the Jewish tradition, may Hersh’s memory be a blessing,” she stated.
This tragic development underscores the ongoing tensions and humanitarian crisis in the region, as efforts continue to secure the release of remaining hostages and work towards a resolution to the conflict.
