In recent days, Moroccan markets have witnessed a significant increase in chicken prices, with the cost per kilogram now ranging between 23 and 25 dirhams, up from the previous price of 17 dirhams.
In an exclusive statement to “H24info”, Abderrahmane Riyadi, Secretary-General of the National Association of Poultry Meat Producers (APV), explained the reasons behind this sharp price increase. Riyadi pointed out that the recent heatwave had a negative impact on poultry farms, leading to a decrease in production.
Riyadi also added that the rising costs of raw materials used in poultry feed production contributed to the price increase. He drew attention to the fact that the price of a single chick has risen by 75%, from 4 dirhams to 7 dirhams.
Concluding his statement, Riyadi expressed his expectation that prices would return to normal levels in the coming days, as poultry growth rates improve on farms, provided Morocco does not experience another heatwave.
It’s worth noting that this increase in chicken prices has raised concerns among Moroccan consumers, especially with the approaching holy month of Ramadan, which typically sees an increase in meat consumption.
This price surge has highlighted the vulnerability of the poultry sector to environmental factors and market fluctuations, prompting discussions about potential measures to stabilize prices and ensure food security in the country.
