Funding a stadium in Côte d’Ivoire sparks debate at Fes Meknes regional council

In a move that sparked a lot of controversy, the office of the Fez Meknes Regional Council included a point in its recent agenda related to a draft partnership agreement to finance and implement a soccer stadium in Danané Tonki, in cooperation with the Tonki region in Côte d’Ivoire.

This initiative was widely criticized, as local affairs followers wondered how the council could direct funding towards projects outside the country at a time when cities within the region suffer from a severe lack of sports infrastructure.

In a related context, Abdelhak Abou Salem, vice president of the Fes Meknes region, pointed out in a media statement that the Ministry of Interior funded the project, while the region contributes only 30 percent.

Abou Salem explained that the agreement represents a “win-win” policy, considering that cooperation with Côte d’Ivoire could benefit the region, despite the criticisms directed at the council.
