National security agents at the Tangier Mediterranean port on Thursday thwarted an illegal smuggling attempt of medicines containing internationally controlled narcotic substances.
According to security sources, the control operation conducted by the police officers resulted in the discovery of large quantities of medicine manufactured from narcotic substances inside a shipping container, and the container was on board a ship coming from an Asian country and heading to a West African country.
Authorities were able to seize 182,200 vials of the drug, as shipping manifests were manipulated and false declarations were made indicating that the shipment contained motor vehicle spare parts instead of the banned drugs.
The Scientific and Technical Police took samples of the seized items to be analyzed at the National Laboratory of the Scientific and Technical Police, in order to conduct the necessary tests.
In the same context, the competent judicial police opened a judicial investigation under the supervision of the Public Prosecution, to uncover those involved in the attempt to smuggle these substances, and identify the routes and destinations of the smuggling, in coordination with Interpol offices in the countries concerned by the sea voyage.
