Moroccan sprinter Sofiane El Bakkali made history on Wednesday by winning the gold medal in the final race of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
El Bakkali was greatly supported by his teammate Mohamed Tindoft, who opened the Moroccan delegation’s medal tally, after their outstanding performance in the preliminary rounds of the race.
El Bakkali, a reigning Olympic champion from Tokyo 2020, topped his elimination group with a time of 8 minutes, 17 seconds and 91 hundredths, while Tindoft took first place in his series with a better time of 8 minutes, 10 seconds and 63 hundredths.
El Bakkali, who won Olympic gold in the previous edition, seeks to write his name in golden letters in the history of Moroccan athletics by achieving the historic feat of winning gold for the second time in a row, while Tindoft hopes that his first participation in the Olympic Games will be marked by a medal.
The finals of the race kicked off amid strong competition, with an Indian runner leading the race at the start, before an Ethiopian trio grabbed the lead and set the pace. El Bakkali opted to watch from the top six, while Tindoft was trailing the rest of the field.
As the race drew to a close, the field was evenly matched, with Tenduft showing his best form in the final moments.
On the final lap, an unfortunate incident saw Ethiopian runner Lamicha Kirma, the world record holder at this distance, fall, giving El Bakkal the opportunity to unleash his final sprint.
In the end, Sofiane El Bakkali finished the race with a time of 8 minutes, 6 seconds and 5 hundredths of a second, winning the gold medal, while Tindoft finished 12th with a time of 8 minutes, 14 seconds and 82 hundredths of a second.
The Moroccan Olympic delegation is looking to add a new bronze medal, as the “Olympic Lions” face the “Pharaohs” in the third place match in football tomorrow, Thursday, in Nantes, France, which is a historic achievement for Moroccan football in the Olympic forum.
