In the Iranian capital Tehran, an official and popular funeral ceremony was held today for Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’ political bureau, who was assassinated by Israel in the city yesterday.
Thousands of citizens gathered at Tehran University, carrying pictures of Haniyeh and Palestinian flags, and a number of prominent Iranian officials participated in the ceremony, including Iranian President Masoud Bazeshkian and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who presided over the funeral prayer.
State television broadcast footage of the two coffins, those of Haniyeh and his bodyguard, being placed in a truck and driven through the streets toward Tehran’s Azadi Square, where mourners threw flowers in their honor.
After the funeral in Tehran, Haniyeh’s remains will be transported to Qatar, where he will be buried next Friday. Haniyeh recently attended the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s new president, Masoud Bazeshkian.
