In a surprising development, the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, has been announced. This event may lead to radical changes in the leadership of the Palestinian movement and raises questions about the future of the conflict with Israel.
Who will succeed Haniyeh?
Two main names emerge as potential candidates to succeed Haniyeh:
- Moussa Abu Marzouk: A prominent member of Hamas’s political bureau, known for his relatively moderate positions. Abu Marzouk advocates accepting the 1967 borders as a basis for a future Palestinian state, a controversial stance within the movement. He has experience in indirect negotiations with Israel.
- Khalil al-Hayya: Deputy head of Hamas’s political bureau in Gaza, and close to Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the movement’s military wing. Al-Hayya, known for his strong support for armed struggle, lost several family members in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza in 2007.
Some observers also suggest Khaled Meshaal, Haniyeh’s predecessor, as a potential option.
Potential impact on Hamas
Some analysts believe that Haniyeh’s departure may strengthen the position of hawks within the movement. Hugh Lovatt, a researcher at the European Council on Foreign Relations, says: “This extremely painful event could embolden hardline supporters.”
On the other hand, a Hamas official tells AFP that the movement “will overcome this crisis,” pointing out that the assassination of senior leaders in the past, such as Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, only led to strengthening Hamas’s power.
Current situation and future concerns
After nearly ten months of war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip, and escalating tensions between armed groups in southern Lebanon and Israel, the situation appears particularly explosive.
While many Palestinian political figures praise Haniyeh’s contributions to the struggle for Palestinian rights, residents of the occupied territories express concern about what the future may hold in light of these new developments.
