Algiers – Toufik Bennacer, one of the sons of General Larbi Bennacer, the former head of military justice in the Algerian Ministry of National Defense from 1999 to 2005, has caused a major stir in Algeria by revealing shocking information about the current Chief of Staff, Said Chengriha.
Bennacer, a former businessman now residing in France, released videos over the past 48 hours containing serious accusations against Chengriha, discussing his secret career path, family scandals, suspicious relationships with businessmen, and abuses in his leadership of the military institution.
Bennacer’s description of Chengriha includes allegations of corruption, abuse of power, conspiracies, and manipulation, sparking considerable controversy even within the Algerian regime. This is the first time in contemporary Algerian history that a son of a general from the military institution has openly and so vehemently attacked the Chief of Staff of the Algerian Army.
Bennacer justified his unprecedented move by citing the imprisonment of two of his brothers in late May: Colonel Boualem Bennacer, a senior officer in the Algerian foreign intelligence service, and Nacer Bennacer, a judicial police officer in Algiers. They were imprisoned in the Blida military prison on charges of compromising state security and the functioning of security services.
Toufik Bennacer claims that this scandal is “fabricated” and that General Said Chengriha is the instigator, aiming to take revenge against his late father who had subjected him to judicial proceedings in the 1990s for serious misconduct.
These developments are expected to have significant repercussions and could greatly affect the course of the early presidential elections scheduled for September 7 in Algeria, given the sensitive role played by the military institution in the country’s political life.
