The civil defense in the Gaza Strip, controlled by Hamas, reported on Sunday that 15 people were killed in an airstrike that targeted a school sheltering displaced persons, while the Israeli army confirmed that it targeted “terrorists.”
The strike targeted a school belonging to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat refugee camp, which had recently been subjected to two Israeli airstrikes. This is the fifth airstrike targeting a school sheltering displaced persons within eight days.
The civil defense spokesperson, Mahmoud Basal, stated that the bombing of the Abu Ariban school building, “which shelters thousands of displaced persons, resulted in the death of 15 people,” most of them women and children.
For its part, the Israeli army announced that its aircraft “struck a number of terrorists who were operating in the area of the UNRWA’s Abu Ariban school building in Nuseirat.” It claimed that the building was “used as a hideout” and a base for launching “attacks” against Israeli forces.
Local residents reported that victims, including children, were taken to nearby hospitals.
Israeli attacks on schools in the Gaza Strip have drawn international criticism. France and Germany have called for an investigation, while the Brazilian government condemned the Israeli airstrikes on southern Gaza, calling on the world not to remain silent about the “endless massacre.”
UNRWA stated that the presence of armed groups in the schools they had to abandon should be investigated. In contrast, Israel asserts that Hamas and other armed groups use schools, hospitals, and other public infrastructure for military purposes, which Hamas denies.
