The US military announced today that four of its ships supporting the public dock for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza have become stuck in heavy waves and efforts are underway to tow them away. ‘The vessels have slipped from their moorings, with two vessels now anchored near the pier,’ US Central Command said in a press release. ‘The third and fourth ships are anchored off the coast of Israel near Ashkelon.
The statement also stated that no US personnel will enter Gaza. There were no reports of injuries, and the pier will continue to operate at full capacity.
The Gaza Strip is currently witnessing its most violent conflict ever, which erupted after an unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel on 7 October that killed more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli figures.
Israel’s retaliatory strikes have killed at least 35,800 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory.
Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza, depriving its 2.4 million residents of clean water, food, medicine and fuel.
In March, US President Joe Biden announced the construction of a pier to ease Israel’s restrictions on aid entering Gaza.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, told reporters yesterday that the WFP ‘has delivered 97 trucks since the public pier became operational on 17 May’. He added that in the early days of deliveries, Yassoun residents seized some truckloads destined for warehouses, but the situation has since stabilised.
