The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Thailand, Abdelrahim Rahali, announced the intensification of the diplomatic and consular efforts of the Moroccan Embassy to protect Moroccan citizens affected by human smuggling crimes in Myanmar.
In his remarks, Ambassador Rahali emphasized that the Moroccan Embassy in Bangkok has taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the affected Moroccan citizens and to prevent them from any danger or reprisals.
Ambassador Rahali explained that communication and coordination with the Thai authorities has been strengthened to follow up on the situation of the affected Moroccan citizens and provide them with the necessary support and assistance, and noted that the embassy has exchanged information with the Thai authorities on a daily basis to obtain updates on the situation of Moroccan citizens and the initiatives needed to help them.
Ambassador Rahali added that a number of Moroccan nationals were detained by illegal organizations in insurgent areas of Myanmar, where they were transported by smuggling networks to areas controlled by insurgent armed groups for exploitation in illegal activities.
According to survivors’ accounts, victims were lured by fake e-commerce job offers and, after arriving at rendezvous points in Malaysia and Thailand, were transported to areas controlled by armed groups in Myanmar.
Ambassador Rahali called for increased vigilance and caution against illegal recruitment attempts that can take place online, and stressed the need to intensify cooperation with international organizations and NGOs to confront this dangerous phenomenon.
Ambassador Rahali pointed out that the field work of the Moroccan Embassy comes within the framework of cooperation with local and international authorities, and under the supervision of the Moroccan authorities to ensure the safety of citizens and hold those involved in these heinous crimes accountable.
