The first appeal hearing in the case of Hit Radio presenter Mohamed Bousfiha, aka Momo, who was sentenced to four months in prison for ‘fabricating a charge of aggravated theft’, was postponed on Wednesday due to a clerks’ strike.
All cases that were scheduled to be heard by the Casablanca Court of Appeal on Wednesday 15 May, including the case of Mohamed Bousfiha, alias Momo, which was heavily pursued, were postponed until next week, due to the clerks’ strike.
As a reminder, Momo was sentenced to four months in prison for ‘fabricating the crime of aggravated robbery’. The case dates back to 22 March, when a Momo Ramadan listener allegedly had his smartphone stolen during a live chat with the host. After the ‘crime’, the presenter decided to give him a new phone.
The footage sparked widespread controversy. After an investigation, the competent authorities were able to identify the alleged victim as ‘Mustafa’ who claimed to be ‘Marwan’ during the live call. The story was therefore fabricated between this person and a friend.
Pursued on a bail of 100,000 dirhams, Momo was sentenced on 9 April to four months of imprisonment, while ‘Mustapha’ was sentenced to three months of imprisonment, and his co-defendant to five months of imprisonment.
The court was not convinced by the arguments presented by Momo and his defence – even though one of his co-defendants had ‘exonerated’ him at the April 4 hearing. After asserting that he had nothing to do with the two co-defendants who fabricated the case, Momo announced that he would appeal the judgement against him.
At the hearing on 22 May, Radio Hit, which lent its support to the presenter, is expected to file a civil suit in the case.
