In a major first in Morocco, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs has launched a major project to improve access to places of worship for people with disabilities.
The first trial will soon be launched in 16 mosques in the Rabat-Salé-Qunaitra region. The trial has been entrusted to the Salé-based Society for African Technologies (SACT), with a budget of just over one million dirhams.
According to MAP’s sources, the work includes optimising access to mosques, as well as the external buildings of places of worship, such as ablution areas.
The experiment will then be rolled out across the country.
According to official statistics, Morocco has just over 44,000 mosques and chapels. The torch goes to the city of Oujda, which alone has around 400 mosques.
