A day after the Algiers City Sports Union (USMA) refused to play the second leg of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) semi-final against RS Berkane Sports Club (RSB), the Algerian press unleashed its strongly hostile statements towards Morocco.
Algerian public television reported that the gold award for “journalistic madness” goes to the category of “abnormal treatment of information” related to the exclusion of USM Algiers after they refused to play the match against RS Berkane yesterday, Sunday, in the framework of the semi-finals of the Confederation of African Football.
Without hesitation, the presenter of the news bulletin on the Algerian public channel announced that the Algerian Federation had qualified for the final of the African competition, on the grounds that “players are not allowed to raise slogans, messages, or pictures of a political or religious nature in light of the regulations related to that.”
For its part, Al-Akhbar, the widely circulated Algerian newspaper, said: “The Algerian representative went to the stadium and took all the usual procedures to play the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final. However, the Algerian Federation’s management and players decided to withdraw after the RS Berkane players entered the field wearing shirts bearing the map during the warm-up.
For its part, the Algerian news website TSA said that the Algerian federation remained loyal to its line. “For the Algerian club, it was not possible to play a football match against a team wearing a clear political message on its shirt that is in line with the Moroccan strategy that is trying by all means to impose a fait accompli in the (Western) Sahara, despite FIFA rules prohibiting this type of message.” , says the media from the eastern neighbor.
The news website Echourokonline.com, which thrives on hatred for the Kingdom, also chose a provocative headline to alleviate the bitterness of the defending champion’s supporters due to this forced exclusion. Under the title “The Capital Union proudly withdrew from the circus of the Moroccan regime,” the writer explains that “Officials of the Capital Sports Federation preferred not to hold the match due to “the insistence of the management of the Nahdet Berkane team to play in a shirt with a map showing the area of the (Western) Sahara illegally annexed by Morocco.” .
On social media, the situation is different. The ready-made formulas against the Moroccan regime in the Algerian press have given way to manipulation, and even fake news. Therefore, Algerian accounts broadcast images of disturbances to public order during the tournament matches that were held several years ago, accusing Berkani fans of throwing and targeting the bus of Algerian players with the aim of creating confusion.
