The Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) has rejected the request of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) to freeze the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final matches, pending the consideration of the appeal submitted by the FAF against the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the first match. The first leg between Nahdet Berkane Club and Al-Ittihad Sports Club in the Algerian capital.
A new setback for the Algerian sports bodies in the match against the full map of Morocco. The Algerian media outlet, Al Khabar, reported that the President of the Algerian Football Federation, Walid Saadi, requested the intervention of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) to freeze the Confederation Cup competition, which is organized by the Confederation of African Football, until the end of the tournament, and to consider the appeal related to the first-leg match between… Union Capital and Nahdet Berkane.
Al-Saadi sought by all means to prevent the match between RS Berkane and USM Alger, as part of the second leg of the Confederation Cup semi-final, scheduled for Sunday at the municipal stadium of the Moroccan city.
But the approach did not find a response from this high-ranking sports body. The President of the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Algeria’s request, explaining that the Court of Arbitration for Sport cannot force the Confederation of African Football to freeze the Confederation Cup competition until the Confederation of African Football’s appeal file is submitted.
The main reason is the financial aspect because any suspension could put CAF in a bad position due to the commercial nature that this continental body has with the sponsors and broadcasters who own the broadcast rights.
It is noteworthy that a delegation from the FAF, led by its President, went to the TAS headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, to submit an appeal to this body, the day after the ruling of the CAF Club Competitions Organizing Committee, regarding the match between RS Berkane (RSB) and the Sports Federation of the City of Algiers (USA Alger) in Semi-final first leg. This came after the Algerian team was announced to have lost 3-0 on the green carpet.
